PRESENTATION
6.A. Mobility and Environmental Stewardship
In his introductory remarks, Evan Shields noted that the strategic priorities under discussion
today are part of the DuPage County Strategic Plan for 2024-2029 that was approved by the
County Board in March, 2024. The June 10 meeting received updates from staff on Community
Well-Being and Safe Communities and the October meeting will focus on Fiscal Responsibility
and Thriving Economy. The purpose of these updates from staff is to inform the committee on
how the various departments are implementing the strategic plan and what initiatives they are
undertaking.
Sarah Hunn and Geoffrey Matteson presented updates on Environmental Stewardship. This
strategic initiative brings together inputs from the Stormwater, Facilities Management,
Environmental and Transportation departments. The overall goal of environmental stewardship
is to preserve the natural environment, mitigate the impacts of climate change, safeguard
wetlands and protect public health. This is achieved through strategic investments that promote
sustainable community-wide enhancements to the infrastructures that impact the local
environment. Mr. Matteson discussed the Cool DuPage program and its continued cooperation
with former members of the Green Government Council, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for
Planning and the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus in developing a comprehensive climate action
plan for the region. He noted that a 10% reduction in greenhouse gases was achieved by 2020,
with the goal of achieving a 20% reduction by 2030. Additional objectives include reducing
landfill waste within the county via the Solid Waste Management Plan, reducing methane
emissions via methane-fueled energy production, and installing additional solar-power arrays,
electric vehicle charging stations and utilizing more efficient energy usage through smart
technologies throughout the County campus.
Steve Travia next presented updates on the Mobility strategic initiative. The stated goal of this
initiative is to ensure that the transportation network in DuPage County is regionally connected,
well-maintained, and reliable for all modes of transportation, for the benefit of the public who
utilize our roadways and pedestrian and bike paths, and to ensure a healthy local economy.
Following the presentations by staff, Chair Haider opened the floor for questions and discussion
from members and visitors.
