CHAIR REMARKS - CHAIR EVANS
Chair Evans began her remarks by informing the Committee of the following upcoming Budget
Presentation schedule. On August 1, the Coroner's Office and the Office of Homeland Security
and Emergency Management will be presenting their budget. Then, on August 15, the 18th
Judicial Circuit Court Clerk will present its budget at the regular meeting at 8:00 AM. That
same day, at a Special Call meeting at 1:00 PM, Budget Presentations will be offered by the 18th
Judicial Circuit Court, the Sheriff's Office, the State's Attorney's Office and the Public Defender.
Chair Evans looks forward to hearing these Budget Presentations and encouraged all Committee
members to be in attendance.
In addition, Chair Evans advised the Committee of an item which will appear on the July 18
Finance Agenda pertaining to the Public Defender's compensation. It is required by statute that
the Public Defender receive 90% of what the State's Attorney is compensated. The State's
Attorney is receiving a cost of living adjustment (COLA) from the State, which necessitates that
the Public Defender's salary be increased accordingly. Chair Evans further reported that 66-1/3%
of the Public Defender's salary is reimbursed by the State.
