8:30 AM meeting was called to order by Chair Sheila Rutledge at 8:30 AM.

CHAIRWOMAN'S REMARKS - CHAIR RUTLEDGE  
Chair Rutledge gave an update on the Single Hauler efforts mentioning that 6 townships have  
placed it on their ballots. The website with the survey and other information will be emailed to  
the members for them to share with their townships to see their results.  
Chair Rutledge thanked the Conservation Foundation for allowing her to give opening remarks  
for their Environmental Summit and shared information she believed to be important and  
valuable such as Ample Harvest.  
Chair Rutledge also shared that Kay McKeen and her SCARCE team worked with a grocery  
store to donate an excess delivery of strawberries and bananas they had received, keeping all of it  
out of a landfill.

PUBLIC COMMENT  
David Barcus with Dark Sky International gave updates with Home Depot becoming compliant  
with Dark Sky nationally and an update on Brookfield Zoo and the timeline over the next few  
months in regards to gaining more compliance with Dark Sky. Barcus also shared the success  
and savings of the adaptive lighting system in the parking lots at a college campus.  
Kay McKeen, Executive Director of SCARE, provided updates about the Repair Fair that took  
place in January and will be taking place again in May. McKeen shared information on the scrap  
metal company, Capital Metals, that uses a new technology to sort and recycle non ferrous metals  
and provided a look ahead at upcoming SCARCE events including workshops and teacher field  
trips.

2024 Sign Recycling Event

7.B. Avoid the Spark Illinois Campaign  
Environmental Specialist, Austin Knight, shared the battery education campaign. This campaign  
will be launching around National Battery Day, February 18, 2024. It will focus on dangers of  
rechargeable lithium batteries, how to properly store batteries and where to dispose of them. A  
few of the members discussed how to reach out to those whose primary language isn't English  
and Member Covert offered her assistance in her resources for those translations.

PRESENTATIONS  
Choose DuPage Program Performance Report  
Senior Vice President of Choose DuPage, Rita Haake, summarized the performance report  
conducted by Choose DuPage and The Smart Energy Design Assistance Center (SEDAC) from  
March 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023. The Green Business Program was developed to aid in the  
sustainability, regional economic development, and reduction in waste and greenhouse gas  
emissions for businesses countywide. SEDAC created checklists for businesses to help improve  
sustainability and recognize areas of savings. SEDAC and Choose DuPage worked together to  
conduct assessments of 10 businesses and 11 facilities that would help determine the most  
popular green business practices. They continue to raise awareness to businesses using outreach  
programs through social media, direct mail and webinars.

Member Garcia encouraged that the County continue to pursue more sustainable alternatives to  
single use plastic bags.
