CHAIR'S REMARKS - CHAIR DESART
Chair Dawn DeSart stated she is looking forward to the conversation regarding the "Protect Our
Residents" item on the Federal agenda and hopes to come to a consensus. Chair DeSart reminded
the Committee that the Federal agenda is a fluid, moving document that can be changed at any
time.
6.
LEGISLATIVE PROGRAMS
6.A.
Resolution Adopting the County's 2024 Federal Legislative Program
Chair DeSart welcomed discussion regarding the Federal Legislative Program.
Member Yoo requested the following language be added to the "Protect Our Residents":
As a first step towards ending these senseless acts of gun violence, DuPage County
supports the enactment of common-sense gun control measures to help keep our residents
safe, including a federal ban on the sale of assault weapons and large capacity
magazines, supporting efforts to implement the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of
2022, promoting secure storage on a federal level, and strengthening federal
enforcement of current laws to prevent the flow of illegal firearms across state lines.
There was discussion that included the requested wording change, a title change, and
possible additional wording changes to the "Protect Our Residents" item.
Member Rutledge requested additional verbiage to be added to the Environmental section
of the Federal agenda that addresses the use of single use plastics.
The Committee agreed that all other highlighted changes to the revised Federal
Legislative Program document (other than the "Protect Our Residents" item) were
acceptable to the Committee.
A consensus was made to amend the title "Protect Our Residents" to "Protect Our
Residents from Gun Violence" and revert to the language from that section to the "old" or
previous version of the document. Chair DeSart moved to amend the DuPage County
Federal Legislative Program with the above changes. Member Galassi seconded. A roll
call was taken with all Ayes.
It was decided to schedule another meeting on March 5, 2024. Staff will update the
DuPage County Federal Legislative Program with the agreed upon changes and circulate
the updated document to Board Members. Another vote will be taken on March 5th to
approve the revised document. Members can submit any additional revisions to the
Federal Legislative Program to staff.
Mary Keating answered Member Eckhoff's question regarding CDBG.
